The NOAA Marine Debris Program is pleased to announce the winners of the 2011 “Keep the Sea Free of Debris!” Art Contest. Winners ranged from 5 to 13 years old and were from states and territories across the US, including California, Washington, Maryland, Florida, Guam, and Hawaii. The winning artwork will be featured in a 2012 Marine Debris Calendar.

With their artwork submission, students were asked to answer two simple questions: How does marine debris impact you? What are you doing about it? The 13 winning artwork pieces were chosen based on creativity, artistic presentation, relevance to the theme, and how thoroughly students answered the two questions. As you can imagine, choosing only 13 (of over 400 entries we received) was no easy task! Each of them was heartfelt!

The overall winner (artwork top left), Leilani H. from Hawaii, said on her entry form, “[Marine debris] impacts me because it makes the ocean look ugly and dirty. With the trash in the water it can hurt the reef and the animals with it. Every time I see trash in the ocean I pick it up and throw it away. I also get my friends and family to help pick up the trash and make sure our beaches are clean. If people help clean our oceans we will have cleaner beaches.”

A big thank you goes out to all of those students who submitted their artwork to us! You, our next generation, have truly inspired us and reminded us why we do what we do every day—protect our oceans.
