Keep the Ocean Blue by Being Green as You Wrap Up Your Holiday

As you continue celebrating the holiday season, consider your impact on the environment and make efforts to keep your holiday green! The Office of Response and Restoration has some tips to keep your environmental impact low. As your holiday wraps up, make sure you’re keeping track of that wrapping and being responsible with all of the inevitable holiday waste. Here are a few things to keep in mind while you’re celebrating:

Skip the disposable plates, cups, and utensils. It’s a special time of year, so celebrate it by taking out those nice dishes and silverware and skipping the disposable stuff.

Reduce the packaging you’re using. When doing holiday shopping for gifts or groceries, consider the packaging that these items come in. If possible, opt for items with minimal packaging or stock up on bulk ingredients from the grocery store. And as always, don’t forget your reusable bags!

After all the gifts are opened and you have a pile of discarded wrappings, consider saving some to reuse at a later date. For the wrappings that can’t be salvaged, make sure you dispose of them properly so they don’t end up polluting our waters!

It’s the season of giving, so consider giving back to our ocean by taking a few of these simple steps toward an environmentally-friendly holiday.

Happy holidays from the NOAA Marine Debris Program!
